Smooth Sailing in Endodontics helps clinicians build confidence and consistency in root canal treatment procedures through a practical blend of concise lectures and extensive hands-on training. Participants will refine essential techniques—from access cavity preparation, mechanical and chemical disinfection to obturation —while learning how to properly diagnose, select the cases and prevent/manage common procedural challenges and pain managements. With a focus on modern instruments, magnification, and bio-ceramic materials, this course delivers predictable, clinically applicable protocols for everyday endodontic practices.

Both days include a didactic session in the morning and a hands-on session in the afternoon.

HANDS-ON SESSION (1 plastic accessed molar/1 accessed extracted molar/1 non-accessed extracted tooth
  • Magnification: Utilize the magnifier/dental microscope to enhance precision in procedures.
  • Access Cavity Preparation and Orifice Location: Focus on improving accuracy while preserving tooth structure during access preparation.
  • Cleaning and Shaping: Establish a glide path and efficiently enlarge canals using the rotary file systems to minimize iatrogenic errors and how to manage iatrogenic errors.
  • Irrigation: Optimize techniques and protocols for irrigant activation and adequate debridement.
  • Obturation and Coronal Restoration: Achieve a 3D seal of the root canal system using high-quality materials and hydraulic condensation technique with a bio-ceramic sealer to prevent re-infection.
DIDACTIC SESSION (Fundamental/ Trending and Relevant topics in endodontics)
  • Introduction: Provide an overview of the fundamental steps involved in root canal treatment.
  • Case Selection: Identify potential risks for procedural errors and establish strategies for prevention.
  • Pain Management: Administer adequate medications for patient comfort during treatment and post-treatment period.
  • Endodontic Emergencies: Understand the adequate diagnosis, medications, and treatment plans for conditions like pulpitis, symptomatic apical periodontitis and acute apical abscess.
  • Vital Pulp Therapy: Focus on case selection, treatment procedures using updated bioactive materials, and prognosis.
  • Cracked Tooth and Vertical Root Fracture: Explore current diagnostic tools, prognosis, and treatment strategies for these conditions.

MEET THE INSTRUCTOR

Dr. Alice Li

D.D.S., M.Sc. (Endodontics), Ph.D. , F.R.C.D (C)
Diplomate of American Board of Endodontics
Dr. Alice Li is currently practicing full time at Davisville Endodontics and Toronto Dental  Specialists. She also serves as a  part time assistant professor at the  University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry. Besides being a Fellow of The Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a board certified endodontist in Canada, Dr. Li also earned the prestigious diplomate of American Board of Endodontics, reflecting her dedication to clinical excellence and evidence-based care.

Dr. Li obtained her Ph.D. and M.Sc. (Endodontics) from the University of Toronto. Her academic and research activities are closely connected to her clinical work. Her research interests include improving the mechanical integrity of endodontically treated teeth, advancing minimally invasive endodontic techniques, and developing innovative disinfection strategies. Dr. Li has published many articles in peer-reviewed journals and received numerous international and national awards in the field of endodontics from the American Association of Endodontists, Journal of Endodontics and the Canadian Association for Dental Research. Dr. Li continues her teaching and research at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry, serves as a scientific advisory board member of peer-reviewed journals, as well as enjoys being an endodontist working in Toronto.
